Mathematics

Our aim is to see students given the chance to express their thinking in lessons where learning is not teacher-centred but a student-centred learning process that involves everyone. As a department, we focus on pupil progress to ensure each student fulfils their mathematical potential. We have good teachers in our team who strive to teach high quality lessons that focus on teaching and learning.

Resources
Each classroom is equipped with a computer and overhead projector. All students have access to a textbook. The school subscribes to MathsWatch, therefore all out students have access to the MathsWatch portal, which is a brilliant online resource for learning mathematics.

Secondary 1
Mathematics in Years 7, 8 and 9 is split into four different strands: Algebra; Number; Geometry & Measure and Statistics. The students will be studying different aspects of these strands throughout Key Stage 3. The topics taught in each year can be seen in the overviews below.

Assessment
At the end of each half term the students will have a half term test which will include multiple topics. These tests are to monitor progress and to inform us of any interventions that may need to take place.
At the end of each year the students will have an end of year exam incorporating all topics learned over the year. This test is marked with feedback and graded.

Secondary 2
Students begin studying the IGCSE mathematics syllabus in year 10. They sit the exam in year 11. Mid to high ability students in mathematics will be entered for the extended paper and the less able students will take the core paper.

Assessment
Years 10: Students sit two tracking exams over the academic year.
Year 11: Students will sit 2 formal Mocks in the Christmas and Easter terms and will also sit bi-weekly exams in the run up to their IGCSE exam in June.

Sixth Form
Students study for the CIE AICE and A Level Mathematics course over 2 years in sixth form. This includes pure mathematics topics such as algebra, trigonometry and calculus, along with applied mathematics topics in both mechanics and statistics. Students are thoroughly prepared for these exams through a rigorous programme of revision and regular assessments in line with CIE expectations and any students who are struggling to meet these standards will be offered weekly support classes. Students also have the option to study Further Mathematics in our sixth form.
