Science

A core understanding of Science has become more important in the 21st Century. In the last two decades we have seen the establishment of a permanent space station, mobile phones 300 times more powerful than the supercomputers of the 1980s and the transformation of the internet which has changed the way we live our lives. It is obvious that tomorrow’s workforce must be Science literate in order to give them the greatest choice of careers moving forward in a rapidly evolving world.

Our aim in the Science faculty is to not only educate but create an intrinsic love of the 3 disciplines of Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics). From Year 7 through to sixth form, students will be taught a huge variety of topics and practical investigation work is at the heart of this. Science also requires pupils to demonstrate good mathematical, literacy, and analytical skills and therefore these skills are embedded in our curriculum from day one.

Resources & Facilities

The science department is made up of 2 purpose built laboratories. Each laboratory is serviced and maintained by our science technician and science teachers. Each laboratory comes fully equipped with a teacher’s demonstration bench. There is a full set of text books available for purchase at the school bookshop.

Secondary 1 and 2
Aims
  • To make pupils aware of the historical and ongoing role that science plays in developing the world around them and on a global scale, for the sustainable advancement of the developing world society.
  • Develop the understanding of pupils in Science using familiar contexts, personal opinion, investigation and secondary sources of information in books and on computer.
  • Develop literacy, numeracy and ICT skills in Science by providing varying opportunities to communicate, analyse and display information.
  • Promote collaborative work to develop the pupils’ interpersonal and leadership skills, leading to confidence in problem solving and communicating information to others.
Sixth Form

A-Level Sciences are some of the most challenging A-Level courses on offer and also the most rewarding. Here in BBS we offer Physics, Chemistry and Biology either as individual A level subjects or as part of the AICE diploma programme. Students who study these courses often find themselves with the most opportunities looking ahead to Universities and possible careers. It is no secret that the Top Universities in the world favour students with these A-Levels and achieving top grades may get you into the most prestigious Institutions anywhere in the World. These courses are also essential for any student considering careers in Medicine, Dentistry, Engineering and Architecture which are the most competitive graduate courses available.

Extra-Curricular:

All students are encouraged to enrich their knowledge in Science where ever possible. During the annual Science Week, special competitions are run to challenge students to think of novel ways to complete a task and all year 10 students will research and present on a topic of interest to them, in Science.
All students are invited to join the STEM club, where they not only develop their own scientific concepts, but learn to collaborate with other students in developing original scientific concepts.
